Thrush
Thrush is an infection caused by a yeast called Candida. Small
numbers of normally harmless Candida commonly live on the skin and
around the vaginal area. However, the Candida may invade the vagina
and under suitable conditions can multiply, causing the unpleasant
symptoms of Thrush.
The most common causes of Thrush are:
- Use of antibiotics
- Wearing tight, synthetic clothing such as nylon underwear or
wet swimming costumes or exercise clothes.
- Obesity
- Pregnancy
- Diabetes
- Birth control pills
- Contamination from the GI tract (remember to wipe from front to
back)
- Change in vaginal pH
Thrush is the second most common cause of a vaginal discharge,
(the most common being Bacterial Vaginosis.) The discharge is
usually thick and curd-like (similar to cottage cheese) with no
odour. Thrush can cause severe itching in the vaginal area,
redness, irritation, and even a burning sensation. Sometimes
symptoms are minor and clear up on their own. Often symptoms can be
very irritating and will not resolve without treatment.
The first time you think you have Thrush it is advisable to see
your Doctor. If they diagnose Thrush, they will probably prescribe
an anti-fungal cream and/or a vaginal pessary (a tablet you insert
into your vagina); there is also an oral tablet which some women
prefer. These products are also available from your Pharmacist
without a prescription.
