Thrush
Thrush is an infection caused by a yeast called Candida. Small
numbers of normally harmless Candida live on the skin and around
the vaginal area. If Candida gets inside the vagina it will grow
and can cause the unpleasant symptoms of Thrush.
The main symptoms of Thrush are:
- Itching and irritation around the vagina
- A burning sensation
- A thick discharge (like cottage cheese)
Thrush does not make vaginal discharge smell different
The most common causes for Thrush are:
- Taking a course of antibiotics
- Wearing tight clothing such as nylon underwear or wet swimming
costumes that prevents ventilation
- Being very over weight (obese)
- Being pregnant
- Having diabetes
- Taking birth control pills (commonly known as the pill)
- A change in the pH level in the vagina
- Not wiping from front to back when going to the toilet
The first time you think you have Thrush it is advisable to see
your Doctor. If they diagnose Thrush, they will probably prescribe
an anti-fungal cream and/or a vaginal pessary (a tablet you insert
into your vagina); there is also an oral tablet which some women
prefer. These products are also available from your Pharmacist.
